Top Ten Rap Albums of 2016

Here will be a list of the top ten Rap albums. Ranked in order with as the best album of the year, followed with five honorable mentions.

  1. J. Cole 4 Your Eyez Only

A very thoughtful, mature album that covers life and death as well as the idea of legacy.  This cohesive project that is tied together by James McMillian Jr’s story to his daughter Nina has a consistent tone and high quality layered production. On his 2014 FHD album,  I stated that it had a high level of introspection and vulnerability which now has been vastly surpassed by 4YEO. I understand why some might have a hard time digesting this album because a point Effin Mattie on the Stay Woke! Podcast  stated “there is no turn up tracks”on this album.  For me a more laid back person that gravitates to darker moodier production this was perfect for me.  This again is a mature conceptual album in the regard of the mentality of fatherhood and death reminiscent to me of 70-80’s albums that are intended to sit and listen with no distraction.  All of this made this late entry album, TheSonicBreakdowns Rap album of the Year.

  1. Rapsody Crown

Rapsody was number 4 on my list of albums last year and surpassed that album this year with Crown another late entry that made it very high.  This album expounded on many topic in her previous works but keeping the commentary and perspective current with a motivational agenda to uplift/empower the listener.  Her voice is just extremely pleasant to ear with some of the best verses of the year that is layered over masterful production by 9th Wonder and others.  Not much more is needed to be said beside that Rapsody was a hair away from snatching the number one spot from J.Cole and even in writing this I contemplate switching.

  1. Chance the Rapper The Coloring Book

Chance the Rapper had a hell of a year. The Coloring Book was a very well done project delivered and executed in only a way Chance could.  He has a unique style that is diverse and inviting that provides an atmosphere needed in hip-hop that allows for balance.  I am excited and interested to see what other creative gifts he will give us.

  1. Run The Jewels Run The Jewels 3
  2. A Tribe Called Quest We got it from Here….Thank You 4 Your service
  3. Schoolboy Q BlankFace LP
  4. Bas Too High to Roit
  5. Mac Miller The Divine Feminine
  6. Mick Jenkins The Healing Component
  7. Kid Cudi Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’

Honorable mentions: It was very hard to kick these albums out of the top ten list but it had to be done.  They are still very good albums that I listen to frequently.  They are Scottie Pippen really good but not MJ well at least not this year. Always hope for next year.
